Everything we know about the future of ‘Yellowstone’

Yellowstone’s success is undeniable. CBS is making repeats of Yellowstone, Paramount is making multiple spin-offs, and John Dutton is such a powerful figure in television that he’s holding down an entire franchise. The series also remains extremely popular, even if we haven’t seen any new Yellowstone episodes in over a year. But will we again?

Well, Yellowstone fans, I come with both good news and bad news. The good news is that Yellowstone will have an official ending for season 5. The bad news is that audiences don’t have nine more months to watch. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the final episodes are set for November 2024, when we will see the end of the Dutton family’s story. I choose to watch the news with a half-full glass of water. Yellowstone will have a real ending! In addition, Sheridan is also said to be working on two more spin-offs. There’s a present-day story set in 2024 — most likely the sequel Paramount has teased, with Matthew McConaughey possibly set to star — and there’s another prequel set in 1944 Don’t worry, Yellowstone will continue.

The show will continue without its main patriarch, 68-year-old actor Kevin Costner. The actor’s rumored feud with series creator Taylor Sheridan over filming schedules and contract disputes certainly didn’t help delay the series finale. Other elements include the SAG-AFTRA strike, Costner’s divorce, the actor’s plans for his own Western series (Horizon), and the hot clip of Sheridan’s own strike in other Paramount+ series, such as Special Ops: Lioness and Attorney at Law: Bass Reeves.

A new report from Puck News’ Matthew Belloni suggests that Costner’s team is actually “still demanding that Sheridan bring him back to finish his part,” but now it’s the Yellowstone creator who’s ready to move on. without him. “Sheridan is said to be extremely pleased with the way he ended the show without Costner,” Belloni reported. “With filming set for this spring and summer, the clock is ticking for any reconciliation.” Furthermore, Paramount has yet to confirm what the future of Matthew McConaughey joining the series will mean for the story of the Dutton family. But that doesn’t stop us from speculating—let’s dive in anyway.

Will there be a sixth season of Yellowstone?

As announced by Paramount, plans for a sixth season have been scrapped to make way for an untitled sequel series starring McConaughey. Will this series be something completely different or is it Season Six with a different name? Many actors have expressed interest in continuing the story, and Paramount is even rumored to be considering bringing back some of the previous Yellowstone characters in some capacity.

According to Taste of Country, the series is also briefly considering adding a long-lost Dutton brother to be played by Christian music star Cory Asbury. “I’m supposed to be Kayce’s long-lost brother,” he said in an Instagram live video. “We plan to move to Montana within a year. We’re ready.” Asbury reportedly set up a meeting with Luke Grimes and Taylor Sheridan before the off-screen drama began. You never know, Cory! Any and all possibilities remain very vague.

What about spin-offs?

The second season of the prequel Yellowstone, 1923, will resume production when the SAG-AFTRA strike reaches an agreement. Another Yellowstone sixth season tie-in series could come in the long-awaited 6666 spinoff, starring Jimmy (Jefferson White) and the 6666 Ranch in Texas. Many of Yellowstone’s ranch crew — including Rip (Cole Hauser), Walker (Ryan Bingham), Teeter (Jennifer Landon), and more. — was sent down to Texas to deal with the cattle problem at the end of Thursday’s midseason finale. Now there’s also the announcement of a 1944 spin-off. Will the Duttons advance to World War II?

Regardless of how things turn out, the good news is that Yellowstone has become so popular that Paramount’s number one priority is to give audiences a suitable path forward. With a new release date set, anything is possible for the fan-favorite series.
